Who's a "STYLE" Expert?
One of the many things that annoys me when I read fashion columns and articles and blogs are claims by posters that they are "STYLE" experts and that hence non fashionistas should not have opinions of any validity about fashion clothes or style.
Now this observation does NOT apply to ALL fashion writers. Some are readable otherwise I'd never pick read another issue of Vogue in the hairdressers or a cafe ever again!
Far too often though I have seen fashionistas claim they are "STYLE" experts when what they really mean is that they think they are cos they have an eye for the latest trends and can predict what's upcoming and hot.
An keen insight into trends does not make you an expert.
An analogue from academia would be as if a scholar or student of the classics claimed they were an expert simply because they keep up with all the latest journals and articles and theories on say Homer without having read the author they are an allegedly expert on?
Get my point?
Style and opinions and expertise about it should have a basis not just of insight and observation but also knowledge and history.
So here's a little ten question quiz for fashionistas and style experts to test your background knowledge.
All the questions have a textiles / fashion / style / pop culture connection.
1) Art Deco as a decorative movement is connected to 30s fashion B**h**s and C***** as Art Nouveau is to Symbolism?
2) What came first? Rayon or Lycra?
3) Cotton sheep's wool and silk are probably the three most common fibers used for textiles.
What other plant or animal fibres have been used?
4) Which countries produce double ikat silk?
5) Name five Female Aussie fashion designers.
