White Fox

Do you know why this painting is spooky?
This is called Summer Evening 1941 in Japanese and is a painting by Hashimoto KANSETSU. I was looking for more examples of Shijo painitngs as a sequel to The Koson post and found this work. Looks innocuous and innocent ... and yet ... the flowers are moon flowers and the fox is white so its probably a magical spirit fox a shape shifter resting before or after acts of mischief?
Kansetsu trained in the Shijo school and like other modern Nihonga artists incorporated elements from other styles like Kano and Nanga into his work.
This image comes from the ADACHI Museum which has a website featuring other Japanese artists. The museum is in Yasugi City in Shimane. ENJOY!
