Things I've learnt from Recent VOGUE issues

More stuff I've learnt from reading recent Vogue Issues
In an effort to lessen my ignorance of current fashion trends and to learn what the trends are for fabric and textile design I'm been studying recent issues of VOGUE and other magazines over the summer grrr UNPAID break.
An UNPAID break made even longer by the need to lessen my work hours for the first month or more of the first semester due to caring for a relative.
February and March VOGUE AUSTRALIA arrived togheter at the library.
So what have I learnt.
IKAT IS IN. Well something that often looks inspired by ikat weaves form Central Asia and elsewhere.
For those who know what real IKAT is this raises the question of ... KASURI.
Will kasuri weaves on silk or ramie or cotton appear on the catwalk?
Could Japanese designer use folk fabrics for haut couture?
Moving on ...
There are still far too many six foot tall 12 year olds or people who look like 12 year olds on the catwalk.
Fashion photographers sadly have not yet gotten tired of having Abbey Lee swoon passively like a retrovictorian wimp of the worst kind while wearing haute couture.
Shoe designers have still not learnt the first rule of design:
FORM FOLLOWS FUNCTION.
No guys a shoe is not an accessory or a sculpture or a form of foot decoration.
Its primary function is to support and protect a shoe. Ornament comes second!
I'm not saying shoes cant have style and bling and sparkle or whatever just make them WEARABLE with lower heels.
On the positive side there were some fabulous designer interviews and a spread featuring the wonderful Samantha Harris. Hopefully next year she'll be the cover girl!
Coming soon an article on IKAT and some examples of my attempts to turn abstracts into fabric textile designs.
