VOGUE AUSTRALIA
The September 2009 issue
"Celebrating 50 years"
The September 2009 issue
"Celebrating 50 years"
I didn't read this until September since it disappeared off the racks as soon as it arrived in newsagents but the library bought a copy so I didn't have to wait six months for it to turn up at the hairdressers or something.
First before I critique the best and worst of this issue an edited (for emphasis) quote from Sheila Scotter.
P. 154
" I predict good taste and elegance will return eventually. ... Models ...(in the past) also looked as if they enjoyed their work."
The interview with Sheila Scotter was one of the most interesting features of the issue and there was also a wide variety of other interviews with women of style and intelligence. However as usual there were far too many features and photo spreads featuring models who appear to be 12 year mutants who should be in school!
P.102 Top row of photos. Especially the far top right shot. These are clearly children. They should be in school not wearing see-thru clothing on catwalks.
Yes folks I can see this issue of Vogue being a favorite contraband item for a certain kind of prison inmate?!
But it gets worse. Who approved the photo spread by Greg Kadel? Vogue is supposed to be about style and elegance not soft focus porn fantasies!
Mothers if your copy of Vogue is missing check your sons' room. If you haven't read up to p. 258 yet take a look and see why your zine disappeared and then roll it up and possibly threaten your offspring?
28 waste of space pages of the Lee twins baring their tits or thighs or both and on nearly every page looking like they should have "F**K Me I'm so passive" stencilled on their foreheads. Or worse looking like the photographers primary instruction was "Look stoned and dreamy but look sexy but catatonic but like you're thinking about boyfriends but virginal but ... ". Hey does anyone know if the models zoned out from listening to the photographer's instructions or was it incipient hypothermia from the cold outdoor shoot?
Yes maybe BUT it wasn't a lingerie or swimwear theme! Why the semi nudity?
It made the girls and the clothes look weird in an majorly icky way!
Isn't this suppose to be Vogue not a men's magazine?
How kind of Vogue to cater for the boys and men and men who like girls ... very young girls?
This is not GOOD fashion photography in several if not every sense of the word GOOD!
Fortunately the next feature is David Downton's elegant watercolors of Cate Blanchett!
The Fine Vintage feature was of interest but in my views the best feature was
a much better photo shoot that embodies the best aspects of fashion photography and had style and elegance and a model who looked like she ACTUALLY enjoyed her work.
Yes I'm talking about the Short Suite shoot featuring Holly Thompson.
A frequent explanation is that excuse for some of the features of fashion that annoy many women not just feminists is the FANTASY one.
Well this photo spread shows you can have models who interact with the camera and set and theme, who are active, not passive with stoned f**k me expressions, and who can use their pose and posture to say, yes this is a fantasy but I'm having fun and you could too.
This feature had a wonderful quality of playfulness or as the Japanese say ASOBI!
The model seems to or does know she's playing at dress up but you can share her pleasure.
More elegance and style please Vogue and less soft pron!
Fantasy is good but fantasy with style and elegance and grace and innovative well cut clothing playfully presented and less weird looking teenagers who should be in school and not looking not they're malnourished or on drugs or can look forward to mental health issues.
Ignore the Lee twain and read the interviews with Jana Wendt and other truly wonderful and ADULT women of style who went to university and do useful things.
Oh and this was the Australian issue ... did I see any of the new hot Koori models profiled? Nooo?
Vogue stays on my only read in cafes and hte hairdressers list and not just cos of the expense.
