Unicode is probably one of the most under praised and taken for granted innovations of the 20th and this century. The Unicode consortium has an ongoing project to develop charsets encodings and entity codes for all the world's languages scripts and symbols.
Their charsets range from the basic western european language set iso-8859-1 also known as windows-1252 and cover also Greek Coptic Runes Cyrillic Amharic Tibetan and currently some one's working on encoding Balinese!
Another related development is the lovely piece of code that allows me in Inkscape to enter Unicode and generate a svg of a character and then turn that into a jpg gif or png image to imbedd in text in documents for blogservers and other sites and browsers that are not fully unicode compliant!
So let us take a moment to praise and give thanks for Unicode!
Its existence is something we tend to take for granted yet it is truly a wonderful tool for writers scholars typographers font designers and many others!
