The Forgotten Tudor Prince
January 4th 2008 07:16
oops er mmm 8 days just I last blogged! oops er mmm okay to start off the new Year here's an article on a minor royal who nearly changed English history and the heritage laws!
How many of you have heard of the one bastard child Henry did make legitimate?
No not Edward or Elizabeth and then there's the rumors about Elizabeth's cousins the Careys.
We nearly had a Henry the Ninth!
Henry's first son was Henry Duke of Richmond and Somerset Born 1519 Died 1536.
His mother was Elizabeth Blount and Henry acknowledged this child and raised him as a prince. He was on the verge of having Parliament legitimatize the child and probably declare him to be the heir given his only two other children were girls when unfortunately the young man who was married to one of the Howard girls Mary died probably of a viral infection.
Chances are if he can survived at the very least he could have become a regent for Mary or Elizabeth or Edward.
Mary was only 3 years older (born 1516) and Elizabeth was about three years old (born 1533)when he died.
Look a the dates again.
The year after he died Henry married Jane Seymour and sired Edward (born 1537) desparate for a male heir. Anne Boleyn was accused probably falsely of poisoning the boy.
The Howard family was Catholic but if Henry had lived and wasnt made heir there could have been a civil war of English Catholics opposed to a Spanish prince supporting young Henry to take the throne.
Elizabeth and Edward could have had a beloved uncle to portect them from the Seymours?
What else could have happened if Henry had lived?
I'm rather surprised no one has used this as a subject for an alternative history novel yet?
There's a rather neat Wikipedia article aobut Henry.
Check out my book review blog for a detialsof a couple of books about him!
