What if Superman ...

May 1st 2011 05:56
What if Superman
had been Australian?

Action Comics 900 is out this week and the media are running stories about a claim Superman may or may not renounce his US citizenship to be a citizen of the world or whatever.

Citizen of the World mmm

Stories have done of alternate versions of Superman raised by supervillains or in which his parents also made it to earth and one alternate earth version has a Superman whose rocket landed in 1930s Soviet Russia leading to a socialist Superman the Red Son graphic novel I reviewed previously and oh there was a tongue in cheek Superman True Brit story done by John Byrne.

Citizen of the World ... Boy from Down Under?

What if Superman's rocket had landed in Australia somewhere in the Outback or since his parents were farmers in Kansas say somewhere like the Western Plains in a mixed cattle or diary and wheat farm somewhere out near Dubbo or Orange with Sydney standing in for Metropolis?

Our bush boy of Steel sudden arrival was explained as Clark being adopted from a big city or the Kents being his carers who later arranged for a formal adoption. The boy of Steel grew up riding ponies playing footie and cricket swimming in the creek or river and attending a State school.

He was a quiet achiever noted for standing up against bullies and befriending kids from all backgrounds whether they were part aborigine or asian and helping to tutor younger kids and having a rare albino Labrador rather than a kelpie or cattle dog.

Bushfires started by arson lightning or carelessness never touched the Kent farm or the neighbouring area. Soil subsidence forming natural levees caused any flooding to never damage fields with valuable crops and conveniently deposit silt on gully eroded fields that needed topping up. Poachers stealing birds or wildlife from the nearby National Park would have tire blowouts near the police station.

As a teenager Superman also used his powers to fly to the beach and go surfing and patrolling for sharks. He won a scholarship to Sydney university and after finishing a Arts degree got a cadet-ship in a major media organisation. There he meet spunky sheila Lois Lane from a police family and mentored communications student Jimmy Olsen from UTS.

Superman's former neighbour Alex Luthor went to a private boarding school and studied for a year or two at uni before moving into business. He is a major media magnate who also has investment sin biotech and airlines and is regularly seen clubbing in Sydney.

Superman's first public appearance in costume was stopping a bush fire.

He was famous for stopping the Cronulla Riots diverting the Queensland floods and his recent migrant rights walkabout after the unfortunate incidents following Kandor City's materialization in Central Australia.

(General Zod after mysteriously given rapid processing of naturalization is now running for State politics after undergoing family therapy. This may or may not have had something to do with his and the El family's major contributions to political parties and other organisations and using Krypton rapid growth crystals to solve the housing crisis.)

Cousin Kara is a noted fashionista on the Sydney social circuit.

A white labrador with a mysterious resemblance to Clark childhood pet who'd surely be dead of old age by now stars in a popular children's show and a big mute guy called Non.

Clark and Lois and have a daughter Lara and two foster children Connor a relative and Chris a Kryptonian boy staying with them while his parents are in therapy. They live in Balmain in a terrace Clark bought and renovated and have a country house they call the Fortress of Solitude in Tasmania. Clark jokingly claims this was the closest he could get to the South Pole!

Clark currently works for the ABC as well as writing columns and articles for various magazines and his own regular current affairs commentary blog.

Superman was recently offered honorary citizenship of nearly every country on the planet for his role in recreating international peace and rescue efforts.

He declined an invitation to attend the recent royal wedding due to prior commitments.

The author of this speculative piece does sometimes read comics and is currnetly reading Jasper Fforde and trying to translate a couple of Greek poems and finish a bilingual magazine cover design with typography in Chiense and English.
