Simply Shino Two
This time with pictures! I would have had this up sooner but had to search past dozens of images of some manga anime character.
Shino is the name of a glaze and a style. Not all Shino is a lovely elegant glossy soft white with whispers of red or orange at the edge of the glaze tho when it is it looks like this!
This is from the Momoyama period and is "Picture" Shino.
The next image illustrates Nezumi or Gray Shino when the white of the glaze interacts differently with the slip below the glaze. This is a fragment recently discovered by Japanese archaeologists digging on the site of a castle trash heap.
Shino underwent a revival in the 1930s when Arakawa Toyozo discovered fragments and went to experiment with Shino and other Mino styles.
The next few images are modern Shino some by Japanese potters and some Australian.
You'll see the family name Kato a lot in connection with Shino and other Mino-yaki as it was a Kato who developed the Shino glaze back in the Momoyama era and many family members are still potters or ceramic artists in a variety of styles, Shino and otherwise.
The artist who created this piece is also noted for his contemporary works.
I hope even at this small size you can get some idea of why Shino fascinates many ceramicists?!
Enjoy!
