SGU Stargate Universe

SGU
Stargate
Universe

I got fed up with Stargate some time ago and not just I could only see episodes in very late night time or cable which I dont have. (I will not share a long horror story about fannish and pro misbehaviour).

So we had the pilot last night In Australia.

Was it any good or at least promising?

Mmm good SFX and camera work. Robert Carlyle was enjoyable to watch though I had the strange feeling he was channeling Brent Spiner?

The premise mixed group of civilian scientists and visitng group of pollies and military types escpae from off world base and end up stranded on an Ancient Starship galaxies away.

The life support is failing leading to an unexpected sacrifice by one character.
One of the better moments.

Will it be watchable?

Yes if the writers have the courage to do a few more unexpected deaths to keep us on our toes but they need to develop the female characters a bit ... no a lot more ... and why oh why does the fanboy genius character look like a younger version of Brad Wright one of the producers?

Has some potential but dont rush out to get the DVDS yet.

I had a similar response. As a big fan of the original film I persevered with SG-1 for as long as possible before it slipped back into the world of tired Sci-Fi cliché. Since then I've unburdened myself of any connection to the franchise or its spin-off, save the original feature.

That said, I gave Universe a chance last night, and found myself rather torn. On the one hand, the premise is quite interesting, the dialogue largely well-written, and the acting and direction more than adequate. I couldn't help but feel that I would have enjoyed it more had it opted to stand on its own feet, rather than take the spin-off route. The problem with this would have been that so much of the premise falls back on staples which have been established in the first two series', ie the rules concerning gate travel etc. The debt to Battlestar Galactica was also painfully obvious, and I wonder what direction the series would have taken had BSG not been there to shape their ideas.

Ultimately, I'll probably go along for the ride as long as it continues to be enjoyable, but there's way too negative baggage from the first two series' for me to ever fully embrace it.
