Rubens was a fashionista

October 31st 2008 23:12

Did you know that

Rubens was a fashionista?

Yes Peter Paul Rubens the famous painter was also a trend setter and socialite welcome in courts across Europe and his portrait paintings depict courtly trendsetters and persons of style and influence.

Here's a portrait of a fashionable young woman of the 17th century.

If you showed Rubens and his social set a photo or video of todays Supermodels they probably would have looked aghast. "Tall pretty and thin" ? They would be thinking why are admire underfed freakishly tall peasants?

What matterd to them in a depiction of beauty was style and grace .

How Rubens saw and painted the Graces!

Okay so these ladies probably had high diary diets but they're still beautiful because they have balance and structure and grace.

Can you imagine a composition of the three Graces using naked super models ?

Ugh all those exposed ribs and bony hips and not enuff flesh to cast interesting shadows!

So my point is show this image to the sort of fashionista who thinks super models should be tal thin and pretty and watch their petty reaction and excuses.

If you are truly concerned with style you may be intrigued with how concepts of beauty and style have changed since the 17th century and you may even decide to read a few books on Rubens ?

The fashionistas or fashion victims will probably be thinking ugh fat cows posing or something worse or be going duh who's Rubens?

Which is more important current transitory trends or abiding enduring style and grace?

I think our idea of female beauty comes from marble statues. There's nothing inherently ugly about a hairy woman. But you can't make a marble statue with hairy legs. Even if you have a set yourself.
