Yes colored slips not glazes!
I would love to know how he tints the slip or underglaze to get that deep blue black color since black slip can turn brown. Even more intriguing if you've worked with shino glazes is that none of the blue seems to have interacted with the shino to change the color? If you look closely there's a perfect balance of white over deep blue!
