Prophecy is More than Foresight
A lot of people hear or see the word Prophet or Prophecy and presume its primary meaning is a prediction about the futre and a person who makes that prediction.
A prophet in the original greek however was a speaker for a god.
Pro phee from the verb pheemi - say and -tees an agent suffix.
The pagan prophets have oracles and also interpreted omens.
They explained both past present and future events.
The Old Testament Prophets were speakers for God but also teachers and guides and wonderworkers and preachers in the modern sense of the word.
However many cults and sects refer to their leaders as Prophets because the leader also preaches and claims the right or interpret the word or will of god.
Prophecy is not just Foresight.
If you interpret or speak for the Divine you may be performing an act of prophecy!
What does Prophet and Prophecy mean to you?
By the way does anyone know the Hebrew and Arabic for prophet?
I think the words that translate into English as Prophet from those languages actually mean something like wise man?
Anyone know?
