OMOI

omoi japanese language
OMOI homonym

Learning the difference between these two characters is important if you want to understand bungo - classical Japanese even in a limited way.

Written in Kana its easy to confuse omoi and omou with the other readings of kasanate - e omomi omona kasaru etc

Are you thinking ... but you only have to look at the kana or the romaji if you don't have a version of the text showing the Kanji?

Yes but the Japanese love to pun on similar endings.

I've been trying to teach myself Bungo to read Heian verse and beleive me there have been many times I've been bewildered wondering if I'm looking at a verb suffix or a particle!

So folks if you're seeing omo- anything in a Japanese poem slow down and look very very carefully at the kana or the final syllables!

Japanese homonyms argh as if we didnt have enuff in English!

There's a good reason the Japanese still use kanji alongisde kana!
