OHARA KOSON
Ohara Koson (Birth name Ohara Matao) was a twentieth century Japanese artist in the Kacho-e style , literally in SinoJapanese flower Ka bird Cho image(s)!
E is hua in Chinese. Picture Sketch Image Drawing Plan.
The character is quite literally a brush in a hand making an image.
I used one of his pictures to illustrate a previous blog and via Google Image Search have found some more to share.
He studied Shijo painting a "realistic" style invovling very fine details used to depict animals flowers birds and people but as created pictures used for the poster / print trade .
A traditionalist he painted on paper and sent the images to the engravers to be turned into prints and posts using the woodblock method.
He also however painted on paper and silk and from 1912 to 1923 most of his output was paintings. His print publishers persuaded him to return to designing for prints which were very successful exports sold as trade fairs in and galleries in the USA and Europe in the 1920s and 30s.
As well as the name Koson he also used the names Shoson and Hoson and like many traditional artists may have sometimes signed works by students to help them get their first sales.
If you see a print in this style and know for sure its not a silkscreen copy it might be worth getting an antiques dealer to to take a look at it!
But get check its not a later copy. This artist was very popular!
I'm not sure who has the current copyright but I am citing them for educational purposes so I think that's reasonable usage. Enjoy!
