NGHI
It's A rainbow
A story about words changing.

gei ni rainbow chinese character
Rainbow the older form

Most modern texts use HONG 2 as the character for Rainbow or translate rainbow into this character.

Japanese calls this NIJI . Its literally chong bug plus kong as a phonetic.

However there's an older word for rainbow Ni 2 GEI in SinoJapanese with the Unicode of 9713 Its NGHI in Vietnamese dictionaries so the orginal form was probably * ngei or ngai given the Cantonese of ngai or ai and hakka nai.

The older more complex form and word gave way to hong probably because with less strokes hong was easier to write and remember.

I only discovered it my self by accident loooking thru the Nelson for words about clouds and rain in the 173 radical section.

So I've givne you the Unicode. Have fun playing with rainbows!
