Gabriele Munter

This summer to get new ideas and inspiration I have been reading about early 20th centruy German Modernists like Kle and Kandinsky. This lead me to the Blue Rider group.
In school texts they mention Kandinsky and Marc and Macke and Jawlensky but not the women who were members of this group like Gabriele Munter.
Gabriele Munter wasa studnet and then lover and de facto wife of Wassily Kandinsky.
She was also a member of Blaue Reiter though later shifted to a style influence more by Matisse and the French Nabis painters .
She depicted herself in this portrait.
She also painted landscapes and still lifes and interiors.
Finally and importantly while many Blaue Reiter members died in WWI or went into exile to avoid the Nazis Gabriele stayed on in Germany and somehow hide and saved her large personal collection of Blaue Reiter and other German modernist art and due to her efforts art that might have been lost can be seen today due to her generous donation to the Lenbachhaus Museum in Munich.
