Lovely DING
Of all the kinds of whiteware the Chinese from the first Xing pieces up to De Hua ware and beyond the finest tradition is that of the Ding kilns.
A quick note : in older books you may find Ding referred to as Ting. Ding is also the name of a type of vessel as well as a style or place.
This blog (One of a series) is just going to be mostly pictures. Enjoy!
The Song or Sung dynasty was the peak period for Ding white ware though it was made before and after this period.
Ceramics historians debate as to either the Liao Dynasty kilns copied Ding ware or employed potters from those kilns. Some of them label Liao white ware as Northern Ding.
Phoenix head ewers were a speciality.
Liao ro Ding.Elegant yet practical.
Plain strong forms for table ware are a feature of Ding ware.
Finally I thought I would finish with a look at the sort of white jade object that inspired the quest for white glazes on Asian ceramics. Notice the similarities?
