Monk by the Sea Caspar David Freidrich

Caspar David Freidrich is one of my favorite Romantic painters. A brilliant landscapist who painted mountian scenery and yet also excelled at portraying seaside and shore although raised a Lutheran he was fascinated with Germany's Catholic past. This particular painting is a favorite of mine cos it shows his ability to depict skies and yet for him is very minimalist!
The image came from Wiki Commons which has an impressive variety of Friedrich imagery.
He trained as a watercolorist and some of his earliest surviving works are beautiful sepia drawings of interiors and then switched to doing oils in his Thirties.
I highly recommend a Google Image search of Friedrich.
