MINO BLACKS
You will have heard of Shino and Oribe if you have been following this blog regularly (if not please consider subscribing) and know SHINO uses a feldspathic glaze that turns anything from clear to white to reds in combination with various slips and clays. Oribe is sometimes partially white.
So I've shown you MINO whites but did you know those clever innovative Mino kiln masters also developed wonderful glossy blacks?
Setoguro predates RAKU and then there's Oribeguro and Kuro-Oribe.
Temmoku as the Jpanese call it originated in China form the Jian kilns.
Temmoku teabowls were made at Mino and elsewhere in Japan.
Working with temmoku seems to have lead to Setoguro.
Next time more Setoguro and Black Oribe Ware!
