Maps Versus Apps
Yesterday my Tweet feed included some one complaining vodafone wouldnt replace their iphone. Since they were tweeting I presume they had acquired a replacement mobile of a different brand and type. What caught my eye was their complaint and claim that they couldn't find their way around Sydney WITHOUT their iphone?
I suppose they were using the iphone to access google maps or some other navigation app and they did mention they were trying to organize tours for a group of visitors but me ... I didnt know whether to laugh or cry?
Seriously there are people out there who can't find a location without access to Google or a navapp.
Duh anyone remember BEFORE Apps and Google there were things called street directories and foldout maps?
Let's take a look at the pros and cons of traditional maps versus various apps.
MAPS require NO batteries or broadband wifi connection.
Yes you do have to pay for them but ONLY ONCE!
With a map you can see the whole route without scrolling up and down a menu and then fiddling with the magnification zoom in and out etcetc
Apps and Google
Your mobile or tablet will take up less room in your bag then a foldout map or street directory.
You can do other things with the phone or tablet.
You get continual updates ( though you'll pay for them?)
You can tag the map and untag it?
Both are portable and the main difference seems to be size and price.
A decent city map will cost less than a iphone or tablet but it will be larger.
Personally I think it would be best to have both so you have backup for when you're in a black spot however I manage quite well without an iphone myself.
It's your choice but don't become so dependent on your iphone you can't manage without it ! Then it's a hindrance not a tool?

PERHAPS they weren't local to Sydney and need a map to get around easily.
PERHAPS you should stop insulting people in a passive aggressive manner to try and make yourself look better.
