LOONY NAMES

Many are the names.of the Moon. In Europe the most names of the Moon derive from ancient words meaning white or shining or measure.

Latin LUNA comes from Luuk na. Shining thing.

The Goddess Selene (Seleenaia) and the moon Selene means the shining one and comes from an old *Svr stem.

Gaelic Gealach comes from GEAL white.

Then there's the many *Men words. Moon. Mae Menulis.

Turkish an Altaci tongue has AY and Finnish which is Uralic KUU.

In Asia however any name that comes form words brrowed from Chinese into Korean Vietnamese and Japanese can be traced to a NGJWET stem. As a consequence you get words starting with NG G W and Y.

Modern Mandarin has YUE but Hokkien has Geh or Goeh or Goat.

Hakka Speakers call the moon Ngiet or Nget or Niet.

In Japanes the Moon is GETSU or Tsuku and there is a Moon GOD male Tsukuyomi.

The Wu dialects have Yih and SinoKorean WEL.

Cantonese uses depending on which transcription you use for spelling it: yuht jyt or jyut.

Vietnamese has three names for the moon: Trang Giang or Nguyet.

Anyone care to add to the list?

Isn't Usagi in Japanese 'Rabbit' as in the 'rabbit' they see in the moon?

I thought you meant names for psychos at first o.O

No, but glad to see you got your buttons on Julie, you do keep busy, I take the lazy approach, suits me fine, I actually value my time which I realize I am giving away, but I guess that will not last for ever. I hope not, anyway, but in the meantime I'd like my internet connection to pay its way, I think I've had my play but would not like to put a time on when it will end.

One thing I know, I shall not be coming up with a youtube or facebook more is the pity.

I think the real potential of the internet is yet untapped.

Keep up the good work.
