is this design insipid?

April 18th 2007 11:07
Marketing fiends and other critics - some thing for you to review critcque ravage etc?

Am American acquaintance suggested I try putting someof my designs up on the cafepress site. I had some photos of my frangipani and thought I'ld try them.

I put this image up on cafepress on various items and so far have had NO nil null sales as yet?

Frangipani Friends Primary Image
This Image and designs it is used in are Copyright to J. Vaux 2007

Variations on this theme can be seen at

My Cafepress shop Voxy's Visions.

So help me out with my marketing with some feedback?

Are the designs insipid? the logos too sentimental? Do I suck as a commercial designer?

Should I stick to fractals? Tho they're not selling either?

See some of my fractal designs

The only item that has sold so far is one button with a religious theme I did for Easter which has the Latin word SURREXIT on it? You can check this out at my SURREXIT CHRISTUS shop.

I need feedback! Sales would be good too! Like everyone else I have bills to pay!

Feedback please?

I think your frangipani is INSPIRED rather than insipid...Lovely and beautiful and delicate...

I agree with Kleo,

I love frangipanis.

I think you should put some of your things into shops on consignment. Select those shops carefully.

It is hard to attract traffic.

I think your initial preamble could do with some careful editing.

I think the teddy and mugs are the most saleable items.

Chat with t shirt shops, do a share deal with someone already established.

I don't think people will care whether its your tree or not, just whether they like what they see.

I love the tote bag

I would not include the mouse pad under housewares.

I think you've got a hard boat to row.

As regards cards, one can see some wonderful fragipani cards for just $1 everywhere.

People will buy things for their children, grandchildren ahead of themselves.

Customers do not fall from the sky

Check out some other sites where they obviously do make sales.

Dare I say it - ebay?

I think that is about as far as I can go. I don't want to discourage you but I do think you need to realistically assess your chances of success. Generally a lot of hard work is involved quite apart from development of the products.

I hope I have been of, at least, some assistance. Have you tried the local markets, I think you'd do well there but I understand there are good and bad days, if you don't want to do it yourself, strike a deal with a regular who has something similar. Don't expect them to work for nix.

When you put up a photo of yourself, smile.

Do let me know if I've been of any help. I've worked for free, uncomplainingly.

Good luck, katyzzz

Dear katyzzz sorry to take a couple of days to get back to you ... someone in our neighbour is running some kind of device that interfers with my broadband singal during the day and in the early evening at the times I'm generally "free" to blog!

And I cant log on from work.

I havnt got room to silk screen stuff at home and also have no car and a health problem that limits what i can lift and no relatives or friends who live nearby and are interestd in doing the market thing.

Hence my choice of Cafepress since they do the printing and shipping and have an international market

i live in australia and i know the biggest market is the US
... trouble is how to stand out on that market !

i tried ebay but got no bites there and you cant multilist items until youve made several sales

so far I've sold exactly one item a badge and so have earnt a whole 25c US ... that was from the usrrexit shop ....lurkers please dont forget the shopowners get paid a markup NOT the whole price you see on the page!

I'm hoping somewhere down the track some chain shop will do a bulk order for prints or tshirts or something!

Yes business is difficult on oneh hand one's competing with cheaper items from asia and on the other ones competing with big companies with massive PR and marketing budgets!

I hope people understand why I include the shop links

at least i'm totally up front and honest about them unlike some of the other shopping blogs!

I dont know what the fashion bloggers earn for promoting bad taste in young women .. clothing discounts?

Me I 'm trying to balance work at a job that underuses my skills bills house work more bills shopping for an older relative bills another casual job more bills and a few minor helath prolblems that add up into a continual hassle ... outdoor markets wouldnt agree with my hip or back

I'm probably going to scrap half the frangipani friend range especially the cards due to lack of sales

sigh in my dreams I see some major chain store' buyer declaring fractals are in and buying up mega size versions of my deisngs for their furniture sections ... in my dreams ... I have tried contacting a few chain stores but they just totally ignore my emails ... not even a short rejection response ... no response whatsoever!

I'll just have to tottoer along trying to mention the painitngs and hoping soner or later someone mentions the links to a major buyer ?

Again sorry for the delay

I must go and batch my blogs before the signla interference returns

thnak you for answering!

Dear Julia, for what it's worth, I think that image is fine but it lacks background. Visit Really Long Link to see what I mean. These guys have it nailed, and you're one step away from doing the same. Good luck! Paul.
