INTERESTING THINGS - ONE

I was going to call this blog Poetic Moments One but due to a discussion over in YOu Should Read my other blog I decided to change the title!

I asked my readers to say what they did find interesting amongst blogs that I had written.

I'm going to write about a few things and people I'll found interesting lately!

First Nick's blog rightfully scolding us for arguing !

Very challenging!

Second. Something I saw this morning.

I was walking along York St away from Abbeys where I had been picking up the latest news letter and YES not indulging in my vice of buying books when I saw someone drawing the streetscene. An elderly Chinese artist had set himself up in a niche that lead to a fire exit with stool and ink painting the QVB building and the skyline skillfully in black ink!

I didnt interrupt him asking questions but I did pause to enjoy the view myself.

Next time any of you are in Sydney look up and enjoy the skyline! Copper domes contrasting with Victorian sandstone and the pale winter sky! Worth painting indeed!

Third I like Chinese calligraphy and characters! I study the six scripts and have read every book on calligraphy Asian and Western in the library. I practise kaishu and cursive and grass and li shu. Why? There are several reasons. The feeling of the brush moving over the paper. The subtle sensation of ink soaking in. The elegance of forms when a piece goes well. The "word" for paper in Chinese is zhi / chih which becomes Shi or kami in Japanese.

Traditional Paper in China and Japan is NOT made of rice rather of cotton or mulberry bark fibers mixed with other things. The character sued to write paper reflects this.

On the left is the 12oth radicall for textiles. Spools of thread in seal script becomes spiral in cursive, a twist of silken thread. Silk however is not the only source of thread for weaving. Plant fibers were used also. The rightside of this character is an ancient pictogram of a floating water plant. Those who know about papermaking know the fibers float flat briefly on top of the water in the vats before sinking down.

Have you had an interesting or poetic moment today or this week?
Would you like to share it with us in this blog?
Whether its something you saw or an idea that inspires you into creative action?

Julie V,

Blog about your heart song issues; what matters to you, don't pander. That's jobs taken.
