IKAT
INSPIRATIONS
One of this year's major trends in fabric and textile design for furnishings and clothing has been Central Asian IKAT.
So what is Ikat?
Dyeing threads woff weft or both into a pattern BEFORE they are set on on a loom generally by tying strings around some sections or using a resist before dyeing to create the patterns.
Ikat originated in India and then spread to Central and South East Asia and up to Japan where it is know as Kasuri. In India its called pathola.
Balinese and Indonesian ikat show a reference for a reds and blues on silk and cotton whereas the Japanese love to use indigo on silk cotton or ramie.
However I have noticed some of the photos of ikat adorned items look like they might be ikat insipred rather than actual ikat weaves?
So here's three examples of ikat for you.
First some genuine Uzbek Ikat from Central Asia.
This sample is from Okinawa.
Here's a closeup of Kasuri on Ramie Cloth
Finally a sample of what happens if you use "Neutral" colors for the dyes.
Ikat isnt just Uzbek. It will be interesting to see if the ikat trend extends to Kasuri and other types of ikat fabrics such as Thai Silk Ikat .
