Hinemosu
and Double Meanings
in Haiku

This week I've been looking at some of my notes on and translations of haiku primarily with the intention of sorting out which might work as lettering on ceramic objects like large platters or bowls. Reviewing my notes and rechecking the dictionary I made an odd discovery.

Here's the Haiku by Buson that I was looking at

Haru no umi hinemosu notari notari kana

HINEMOSU is described as a adverbial noun in one database and translates as all day long or to the end of the day. My text gives this word in kana and I've seen other texts use the kana spelling. However if you read the same sounds as KANJI .... well !!! it could be a compound verb HINE MOSU !

instead of being all day long rising and falling

If its hine(ru) mosu its twirl play blaze burn !

Have you ever seen the surface on the sea as the tide or small rippling waves move over a shallow sandbank or bar at noon or dawn or twilight?

A blaze of shining light ever moving!

I have translated this as

oh the sea at spring
all day long endlessly
rising and falling and ...

but perhaps it could be translated as

the sea at spring
twisting blazing burning
endless rising falling!
