The Henson Controversy
Who really profits?
Oh dear another storm in the teacup of the Australian Art World!
Being a cynic I'ld like to point out that whatever the courts decide it will probably be the Art Collectors who end up making the profits since the moment the paintings are released their collectable value will skyrocket!
Will the kids who posed for the paintings profit?
No unless they enjoy the fame it may bring them years from now?
The main objection people should be making is that we and the subjects of the photos have no way of knowing how they will feel twenty years from now about posing nude.
They might feel good about it. They might feel embarassed.
You can safely bet they will not be the ones enjoying the profits?
The real issue should be not the nudity which certainly is not pornographic though perhaps questionable but can a minor give informed full consent?
Now I'm going to make a confession.
I have posed nude ... but not for photos ... as a model for TAFE art classes!
I however am a consenting adult noted in the art training industry for my knowledge of lighting and anatomy and bringing a certain vibe of dignity with a tinge of contemplative sensuality to the poses... so believe me I know what's erotic and what's pornographic and what's really shocking and confrontional in a nude pose?! And how to avoid it.
It's a real art to be modest and unclothed! Probably a ZEN art?
Do you know how to be nothing but a mass of shaodow and light but still be yourself?
However A 12 or 13 year old is NOT a consenting adult!
Hey could someone declare me a focus of controversy and hence highly collectable?
I have a whole stack of unsold artwork but none of the themes are naked minors!
This is a storm in a teacup!
Critic and collectors and creators have been arguing about when nudity is okay for centuries!
