CHINESE REDS
No not the commies the adjectives!
Yes this is another color adjectives blogpost!
Many basic text books and dictionaries aimed at students tend to create the impression some languages have smaller vocabularies than is actually the case. One might for example think Chinese only has two or three adjectives to describe tints shades and hues of red.
The Best known adjective for Red is probably CHI (Unicode 8d64) Radical 155.
Another well known word is Zhu or Chu "VERMILION" (Unicode 6731 with a variant form 7843. Then there's HONG translated as pink or red.
Japanese dictionaries tend to change the kun readings of the various kanji into AKA or BENI.
Jiang is a deep red crimson (U 7ed3) and WEI a brilliant glowing fire red (U7152 or 7096)
There's also a verb NAN (U 8d67) which means to turn red redden blush.
ZHE is burnt ochre or hematite a reddish brown very important for painters and ceramicists and finally we have Cinnabar RED Dan or Tan !
Enjoy and learn!
