HINTS for HAIJIN
Thinking of writing Haiku?
I see lots of bad haiku written by people who seme to think its just a peom with three lines!
If you want to write haiku Learn Haiku!
1) READ THE BEST Basho Buson Issa Chiyo Shiki
2) Learn some Japanese.
3) Compare several good and bad translations of Japanese Haiku.
Think about why the translations differ.
4) Noted translators of Haiku and other Japanese verse include
Rexroth Blyth Stewart Buchanan
5) Read other Japanese classics especially the 100 poets anthology.
These Heian poets are the ones people like Basho and Chioyo learnt as children.
6) Learn some Kana and Kanji and how the difference between an on or kun reading changes meaning. Some haiku have double meanings.
7) Many but not all Haijin were either Zen or Pure land Buddhism.
Think about how Buddhist concepts influenced their world view.
8) Know Japanese folklore. Example What signifance do foxes have?
9) Take photos or think like a photographer. Some haiku are verbal snapshots. Remember you're trying to condense images into words.
The words and lines are the frame and structure of the composition.
10) Read Poetry in General. Read it in your own language. READ good transaltions from several languages. READ!
To finish here's a haiku I wrote yesterday!
Rain more rain and rain
weaving patterns of satin
drops on the window.
