HAGI
Hagi (ON reading SHUU) is the Japanese name of a plant also known in English as Bush Clover or Japanese Clover . It is one of the seven autumn plants whose names are kigo or season words for Haiku writers. Bush Clover also appears as a motif in Japanese art.
Its unicode is u 8429 utf8 e8 90 a9
As a botanical species it is Lespedeza japonica or bicolor as it can be purple or white.
I have psoted this short piece cos I was rereading a Basho haiku which mentioned this plant and realized I had no idea what the plant looked like!
A Google image search will bring up many images for your pleasure.
The ideography for this plant is the shorthand of the grass radical r.140 over the sign for autumn.
The Chinese word Qiu 1 probably refers to a different plant.
In cantonese this is cau 1, Viet them or tho and SinoKorean chwu.
Enjoy!
