The Garcia List 3

The Nina Garcia List - 3

What's truly essential!

My third comment on the Nina Garcia List preview that appeared in a newspaper.
This list is the basis for a book by fashion editor Nina Garcia coming out this week in Australia.

Out of 100 items what are the essentials those of us on a limited budget should try to have?

Essentials not luxuries!

Boots: yes for ankle boots since these will go with many other items whether they're elegant glider style or chunkier cuts unlike wellingtons riding or knee boots.

Aviators: Well any good pair of sunnies that stop you from squinting!

whether you're a terminal fashion victim obsessed fashionista or someone who strives to look stylish wrinkles and squinting is not a good look!

Black Opaque Tights: Yes yes yes be they shiny or non shiny!

Gloves yes if you can afford good leather that will protect the skin on your hands in winter!

Jeans: Just make sure the cut you choose fits your body and age!

Plain white tees: great for going under jumpers and sweaters and other things.
Get some black ones too!

Champagne: Place a bottle in reserve for those special moments.

Sarong: Use a good one as a sarong wrap throw shawl scarf etc!

Underwear: Bras and panties come before lingerie. You should at least have white flesh colored and dark and please NO BLACK bras under white tops! Yuck!

Other essentials: Shoes Try to buy at least one good quality brand a year. They will last longer. Cheapies can be good or funky but they do tend to die suddenly and completely!

Shirts and tops: Get natural fibres like cotton or silk first.

Synthetics if they are well cut and dont make you itch or fidget.

About Knits whether they are cotton lyrca or wool. Knits can shrink. Buy something slightly loose to allow for this! Remember snug not tight! This applys to tops and dresses!

Finally, and I hope Garcia covers this in her book, ALWAYS Check the stitching and seams whether what you are buying is a cheapie copy or a "quality" brand.

Dont be hung up on designer or brand names but look for genuine quality and functionality as well as funkiness or whatever the in word is this year for the right look?

That's my advice. Take or leave it.

Personally I'ld opt for semigoth myself but I like indigo and ultramarine blue too much!

OH yes one other piece of advice. No matter what you see in fashion shoot sand zines do not try to match florals with stripes and be careful wearing anything with florals and stripes!

Patterns go in and out of fashion. A well cut and colored garment stays in style!

I have read your "list" and I have to wonder why someone who 1.) has obvious contempt for the fashion industry 2.) has not even bothered to read said book, as is evident by your "what is this" references to many of the items and 3.) seemingly has underlying body image issues and a false sense of what is fashionable, and what actually does work for every body shape would write such a piece...in triptych. I am aware that there is a thing called freedom of speech, but voicing an opinion on something you have no real knowledge of, intention of acquiring knowledge of, and bashing some on who, evidently, has more knowledge, experience with, and influence on fashion than you do, just makes you look bitter, angry, and pretentious.
Job well done. Maybe there are some other books you'd like to review before you actually read them.
