My First Bowls

My first bowls.
These are my first attempts at wheel thrown clay bowls!
Yes they're hardly Sung Dynasty ceramics crafted for the Imperial court however ... wheel throwing if you're lefthanded is harder to learn than you!
Even when you get the rhythm right you can still have problems with the clay and the slips and glazes. These bowls were thrown in "House White". After being turned and dried to a firm state they are slipped in blue and othe colors. Slip is liquid clay and you could say its the primer and the clay the canvas. The bird motif was created with a paper resists a cut out placed on the clay and peeled off once the slip was dry.
Next stage is the bisque which is the name of the first firing!
Once out of bisque the glaze comes next.
In this case a clear glaze was used!
I'll also show you some other glazes and works.
Tip for beginners the amount of water you need to kepe the clay damp on the wheel so you can shape it varies depending on the water content of the clay. Reduce the water in the final stages!
I'll inflict ... er share some more images with you soon!
