FA HUA
A MING INNOVATION
You've probably seen modern shinier versions of this since its a popular glaze style but where did it come from?
Back in the Ming dynasty some inventive potter analysed the new cobalt underglazes and stone ware monochromes and had a brilliant idea.
He took the new improved refined cobalt and copper pigments and mixed them into an older style alkali lead base EW glaze similar to TANG Sancai.
He also used areas of raised slip to separate the colors so the glazes would not run into each other and fired them at mid range.
Viola the Fa HUA style.
There'ld be no mass producedindustrial cheapies without those hard working potters who invented moulds jiggers saggars and new shapes and glazes.
There would also be a lot less premixed glazes available for studio potters.
Fahua may seem commonplace now but its development allowed people to enjoy beautiful ceramics at lower prices who had not access or money to acquire beautiful celadons or polychrome stoneware made for the elite.
