D***able DAMS and Peneplains

The current flood situation in Australia is an ongoing tragedy.

Like flies buzzing around a corpse the usual suspects have already started whining two of their favorite tunes.

WHY DIDNT THE GOVERNMENT BUILD MORE DAMS!

ITS ALL THE FAULT OF THE EVIL ANTI DEVELOPMENT GREENIES!

If you know someone doing this

a) send them to the bank to make flood relief donations

b) send them to wikipedia google search or the library to look up PENEPLAINS

YES PENEPLAINS It's science folks.

Geomorphology to be exact.
Geography in a more general sense.

There are actually very few places in Australian where you have the kind of mountain valley that can be dammed for a large hydro scheme or reservoir.

Yes we could have more water diversion and storage schemes but they need to be on a local micro level not megastructures.

If you're a farmer who turned a billabong or wetland into pasture start blocking some of those drains as soon as the flood waters pass!

If you're a town council in any rural or urban area ban development on flood plains and use them for parks and sports fields or donate them to the national stock route system for pastures for the next drought period and turn any abandoned quarries into cisterns and water storage.

PENEPLAINS look it up !

and while you're researching you might want to look at gnammas and how Aborigines used low tech solutions to make the water in gnammas and billabongs last as long as possible.

Water diversion schemes adapted to local geography may help but not mega dams that alter the environment to match our needs.

Finally if UNLIKE Me you are able bodied ( I have a bad shoulder thats still not 100% due to a arm fracture) and have an ute or truck and are on holidays head up to your nearest flood zone and help people move their stuff and go fill some sandbags! If not go make a donation however small!
