Three Latin Quotes about Belief
Three Latin Quotes about Belief
It's Sunday in my time zone today. I know Thought for the Day doesnt make for popular blogs but I have picked three quotes that I think will stuck in your head and give you something to both think and talk about the rest of the week or maybe even longer?
These quotes summarize different approaches to belief in the Divine.
ANSELM
Credo ut intelligam.
I believe that I may understand (God)
SAINT BERNARD
Credo ut experiar.
I believe so that I can experience (GOD)
Credo ut intelligam.
I believe that I may understand (God)
SAINT BERNARD
Credo ut experiar.
I believe so that I can experience (GOD)
Finally the infamous Credo quia absurdum.
I believe because it is absurd.
This is actually a misquoting of Tertullian who was not making an antirationalist stance but rather criticizing a Gnostic called MARCION.
The actual original quote from Tertullian is
Certum est quia impossibile
It is certain because it is impossibile.
Tertullian was writing about the Cruxificion and Resurrection.
What's your approach to Faith Belief and the Divine?
Reason Experience Acceptance of Paradox?
Or a combination of all three?
