Classical Traditions - CHINA
October 9th 2007 08:45
If any country has a claim to have a major tradition it's surely CHINA.
Greece, Rome, Egypt, India and others are major contenders!
By Classical tradition I mean that a country's culture has strongly influenced others in a variety of ways, architecture, science, philosophy, religion, literature, etc.
The Chinese sphere of cultural influence has varied over the centuries.
In the West its influence shows in Persian paintings of the Middle Ages and to the far east it has influenced Japan, Korean, Vietnam and S.E. Asia.
It is claimed that wood carvings inmported from Fujian province influenced Balinese wood carvings in the early twentieth style.
Then there's the influence of Chinese ceramic styles and porcelain.
How has Chinese culture effected you for better or worse?
Just in my bedrom where I have the laptop at the amount theres clothing made in China, Chinese ink and calligraphy brushes, books of poetry printed in China, teabags, paint, inksticks, paper, tin boxes used for cakes by other tenants that I recycled for storage, and probably a few other things I'm not aware of?
East does meet West!
