Classical Traditions Three - Islam
More than just "Arab" !
More than just "Arab" !
Many writers and scholars tend to identify Arabic culture with Islamic culture overlooking that Islamic culture is just as diverse as Christian or Jewish or Buddhist or Hindu ... need I go on?
While Islamic culture originated in Arabia are now many "Cultures" from the Straits of Gibraltar to China and Central Asia to Africa and beyond if you include immigrants to Australia the Americas and Europe. Further more one may well argue that Islamic culture is the heir of the ancient cultural traditions of the Near East and Mesopotamia.
Like most great cultural traditions it has adapted ideas from other older cultures and made them its own.
Consider architecture Islam take the idea of the dome and spread it across Asia!
Then there's the Arabic script almost as widespread as the Roman alphabbet!
Islamic Malay merchants and fishermen form Sulawesi and the Flores probably reached northern Australia long before any Europeans did.
Whatever you think of Islamic religion and culture in the 21st century it is one of the Great traditions!
