Cranky Corellas and Courageous Cockies
Cranky Corellas and Courageous Cockies
Corellas are normally very quiet shy birds. There's a small flock that occassionally visits our neighborhood. They did this morning and were behaving strangely. Perhaps the weekend's stormy weather was making them cranky?
A note for readers who are not Australian. Corella are a kind of parrot with white bodies and yellow and orange feathers on their heads in rings around their eyes.
They're about the same size as sulphur crested cockatoos and dont have crests!
They descended onto our balcony railing with a chorus of corbelling!
Then they moved over to the water / air conditioning tower on top on Kennards and did something I have never seen them do before.
They started bullying a mated pair of mynah birds who live there.
The two smaller birds stand their ground against a group of a dozen birds three times larger than them! The corellas one at a time lunged and shrieked flapped thier wings trying to frighten the smaller birds of the top of the tower.
Then something odd happened. One lone sulphur crested cockatoo flew landed on top of the tower and proceeded to shriek at the corellas.
Presumedly something like this:
"Hey just what do you think you're doing? This is our territory!"
I doubt the cockatoo made an appearance just to defend the mynah birds and yet he didnt swoop down until the corellas started bullying them?
He flew off when the corellas started to turn on him over to the nearest tree and did that thing cockies do to show a lack of respect for other species.... swung upside down from a branch shrieking.
A moment or two later the corellas flew off.
One courageous cockatoo and two mynah birds against a dozen very crank corellas !
One of the oddest things I've seen lately?
