BASRA BLUE

Believe it or not the two images below are "Ancestors" of the beautiful Blue and White wares produced later in places as far apart as Iznik in Turkey and Jingdezhen in China.

One of the first uses of cobalt in Ceramics

This looks rather rough compared to later uses of cobalt in Yuan and ming blue and white ware or other Islamic ceramics but it's important archaeological and other evidence strongly suggests potters working at Basra were amongst the first to creat TRUE GLAZES using COBALT for BLUE.

The Egyptians created beautiful objects in FAIENCE but that's really more an opaque GLASS.

The Islamic potters created tin lead glazes on earthenware which imported to Chinese lead to the use of cobalt underglazes on stoneware and porcelain.

Here's another example.
