Basho's Night Heron Haiku


Night Heron


I finished a translation of this haiku a while back but it took me some time to find a picture of an actual night heron to accompany it. I have read that they hey make a harsh Kark krak noise. Notice the coloring and think of how it might blend into a storm darkened sky?





Here's the romaji of the poem.



Inazuma ya
Yami no kata yuku

Goi no koe


In English :

Lightning strikes now!

Thru the surrounding darkness

The night heron's voice
