ASBOLITE
Why are these peebles and piece of ore important?

Ever wondered where the cobalt in blue and white ceramics came from?

There were no industrial chemists selling processed cobalt carbonate and cobalt oxide in bulk buckets. Peebles and chunks of rock like this had to be ground up into a powder and mixed into paint for ceramics.

This Vietnamese piece is indigo rather than the purer blue on much Chinese blue and white ware but I rather prefer the darker indigo myself. The darker color is due to traces of iron and manganese.

From simple peebles clay and water come beautiful things.
