Artists Do Work!
December 7th 2007 07:13
If there's one thing thats always annoyed me in my never ending quest to go fully pro as an artist its this strange popular belief promoted by media depictions of a small minority of posers and wankers and drug abusers that artists dont work.
Well I'm sorry but thats simply not true!
Whether we are hobbyists amateurs enthusiaists professionals or the vast majority of crafters and artists caught between amateur and pro we do work!
For example this morning I combined two tasks - looking for new images with checking out if the TAFE shop was discounting any end of the year surplus stock !
I walked up to the TAFE shop thru the park to check out the roses and saw a particularly fine golden one. In the process of contorting and twisting myself and the camera into a position that allowed for a good shot I nearly fell over into one of the rose bushes and the muddy soil around them.
Ten minutes later I have a few promising shots the possibility of sunburn and I'm sweating from the humidity. So pleasurable! ???
Then there's art supplies. Paint has to be mixed and stirred. Primer added to canvas.
Oh the special joy if you dont have a car of moving heavy bundled up portfolios and paintings to art shows which be explain why I have given up on displaying at art shows and have to see a physio regularly and why I'm trying to switch to selling work as online prints and posters.
It's summer so if you're scanning reference shots or doing digital modifications to photos or other art you have to work early in the morning or late in the evening to avoid humidity and thunderstorms disrupt broadband signals!
This in top on part time work shopping for an elderly relative and other domestic chores!
Even if my art was selling I would still have to defrost the old fridge before removing it!
No sales so no money for a new fridge. I'm defrosting the old one of rXmas and hoping it will work when turned back on. I started at 10am and the there's still an unmelted chunk of ice at the back that refuses to budge or crack. Just drip drip drip! Aaargh aarghargh !!!
And bloggin can be work. I would rather be reading books for the review blog.
I do PR for my Red Bubble site and has anyone sold for Xmas NO!
and now as I type my glasses are fogging up! No air conditioning! Adds too much to the power bill!
So far I've earnt about one dollar from Addsense and NO one has donated to the Paypal link on my Geocities site and no one has gifted me any certificates or books from Amazon.
Why do you think I'm not working?
when will some one show some appreciation!
In a solid form?
Artists do work! I have literally strained my eyes and back sitting up doing long sessions of image editing. Contrary to what you see on TV unless you have state of art software and equipment that costs aobut $5000 dollars images take longer than 30 seconds to do!
I wanted to earn YES EARN enuff money to buy a NEW graphic tablet for Xmas. I dont want to buy a second hand one! I want some thing NEW!
Is Bruce Wayne or Bill Gates lurking? Nope?
Are there any real life secret santas out there?
Can anyone intro me to a major art dealer? Nope?
Time to cross fingers and pray the fridge still works when we turn it back on ... maybe if I dont have to buy a new fridge I can afford a graphic tablet. WIth my kind of luck the price will go up!
I really really really would love to have at least one sale before Xmas.
I only get the markup but that would bump me up the search engine rankings and improve the chance of another sale?
Now I have to go and work out of the items I put in the eskie will keep until the fridge is turned back on and which has to be eaten or cooked today or thrown out!
P.S. There's still one last chunk stuck at the back of the fridge so I have navigate around the open fridge door to make the evening meal AAARGH!

Hope your day was better than mine!
At least I had a good sf novel to curl up with at teh end of the day ... and in keeping with the general mood of the day some idiot over in Barker decided it was perfect weather for a cadet artillery drill.
I'm finally relaxing and suddenly boom boom boom!
Certainly strtled me and woke up every single bird in the neighborhood so there s a mass of frightened parrots sqwaking and screaming to accompany the booming noise!
This morning as I type its misty and cool for a change and NO thunder!
